November 4/5 – God’s People Thank Him By the Sea

Building on Last Week: There is no greater reason for thankfulness than God’s care for us.

Story Scripture: Exodus 14:1-22,27; 15:1,20-21

Bible Verse: “I will give you thanks.” Psalm 35:18

At Home Ideas:

Red Sea Plaque
You will need: 1 wave pattern; green or dark blue construction paper; Styrofoam meat tray; glue; paintbrush; sand or cornmeal; small seashells; fish stickers; 8” length of yarn
Print “God Helps His People” on the tray. Put glue on the meat tray and show your child how to spread the glue over the lower part of the tray using a paintbrush. Help them glue the waves onto the tray. Put glue on the lower part of the waves and help them sprinkle sand or cornmeal on the glue. Shake off the excess into the trash. Put dabs of glue in the sand and add seashells. Put fish stickers on the waves. Tape a piece of yarn to the back of the plaque for a hanger. How did God help his people? Thank God for helping us.

Craft Stick Wind Chime
You will need: craft sticks; yarn; tape; crayons
Give your child 5 craft sticks and five foot-long lengths of yarn. For the sea, your child should color four of the sticks blue. Using a crayon or marker, write the Bible verse (“I will give you thanks.” Psalm 35:18) on the last stick. Tape a piece of yarn to one end of each blue stick. Then tape the other end of the yarn to the verse craft stick, horizontally. Repeat for each remaining stick. They should be about 1” apart on the verse stick. Tape a piece of yarn to the back of the verse stick on either end to form a hanger. Show your child how to gently blow on their wind chimes to make a noise.

October 28/29 – We Can Care for Others--Review

Building on Last Week: Your children will enjoy remembering the need to care for one another.

Story Scripture: Review of Lessons 6-8

Bible Verse: “Have the same care one for another.” 1 Corinthians 12:25

At Home Ideas:

Flowers in a Vase
You will need: craft sticks; various colors of construction paper; scissors; paper cups; tape; crayons
Have your child create a flower vase by decorating a cup. The bottom end of the cup should be facing up. Help your child cut simple flower shapes from the construction paper. Tape a flower to a craft stick. Poke a hole in the bottom of the cup to hold the craft stick stems.

Footprint Game
You will need: paper, scissors, tape
Hold several pieces of paper together and cut out a footprint shape. Tape the footprints in a path around the room. Have your child be the leader. They must follow the footprints even if it leads them under a table or over a footstool, etc. You follow him/her along the footprints.

This reminds us to that we can go forth into the world on our strong legs to care for others as Jesus did.

October 21/22 –Peter and John Help a Lame Man

Building on Last Week: Peter and John heard Christ’s parable of the Good Samaritan firsthand and took it to heart, as seen by their help to the lame man.

Story Scripture: Acts 3:1-12

Bible Verse: “Have the same care one for another.” 1 Corinthians 12:25

At Home Ideas:

Active Feet
After learning the story of the lame man, help your child to appreciate their strong legs by playing some relay/running games. Stop and pray to thank God for healthy bodies. Suggestions: run, jump, hop, gallop, or march. Crawl like a spider or crab. Hop with a ball between their legs. Walk on tiptoe.

Coin Pictures
You will need: white paper; tape; various coins; lightweight aluminum foil; construction paper
Give your child the white paper and help them tape it to a table. Then let them choose several coins . Put rolled up tape on the back of each coin and place them on the paper. Give your child a piece of foil. Lay the foil over the coins. Show them how to rub gently with their fingers or other blunt object to make the coin shapes appear on their foil. When they are finished help them carefully tape the foil to a piece of construction paper to help preserve it.
Who asked Peter and John for some money? What did Peter give the lame man instead of money? Thank God for people who tell you about Jesus.

October 14/15 –A Kind Man Cares for a Hurt Man

Building on Last Week: Telling people of God’s love for sinners is necessary when presenting the message of salvation. However, we must also be willing to show people the love of God by meeting their needs.

Story Scripture: Luke 10:30-35

Bible Verse: “Have the same care one for another.”1 Corinthians 12:25

At Home Ideas:

Helping Cup
You will need:
foam cup
Permanent marker
Crayons
Decorative stickers
Shoelace or sturdy sting
Large wooden or plastic beads or large pasta

Let your child decorate their cup with crayons and stickers. Knot the shoelace on one end. Help your child count out 10 beads to put in their cup. Explain that each time they help at home, they can string one bead on their helping necklace. Talk about ways they can help at home and what Jesus taught about helping others.

Love to Give
You will need: sandwich bag with tie; trail mix that includes raisins, M&M type candies, pretzel sticks and round puff cereal (such as Kix); poster board; pink construction paper; hole punch; yarn; scissors; pencil and a copy of the following poem:

Love Your Neighbors
All colors, all ages, short and tall;
All sizes, both big and small;
Love your neighbors;
Love them all.

Make a 6” heart stencil from poster board. Give your child a sandwich bag and let them fill it with trail mix. Point out that the M&M’s candies remind us that people come in many different colors. The raisins remind us that some people are older, with wrinkly skin. Tell children that pretzel sticks show us that some people are tall, while the cereal shows us that some people are shorter. Help your child trace and cut out a heart from the pink construction paper using the heart stencil you made previously. Glue the poem to the heart. Punch a hole in the pink heart and let your child pull the yarn through the holes. Help them tie the yarn around the bag. Write “I love you” on their hearts before they give them away to a special person.

October 7/8 –A Little Girl Helps a Great Captain

Building on Last Week: Because God cares fo us, we can care for others. One way to show care is to tell of God’s power to save and change lives.

Story Scripture: 2 Kings 5:1-17

Bible Verse: “Have the same care one for another.” 1 Corinthians 12:25

At Home Ideas:

Wash-Away Doll
You will need: white board Con-Tact paper; scissors; permanent marker; washable markers; wet wipes
Peel off the backing from a length of white board Con-Tact paper. Fold the piece in half so the sticky sides stick together. This will give you a piece of paper that has the white board surface on both sides. ( If you can’t find this product-you could use a piece of poster board covered with contact paper.)

Cut a 6” gingerbread man shape from the paper.

Give your child a person shape and help them use the permanent marker to make a face and clothes for their Naaman doll. Then let your child use the washable markers to draw spots (sores) on Naaman. Give your child a wet wipe and let them wash away the sores as you retell the story of Naaman’s healing.

Explore God’s World
Elisha told Naaman to dip in the Jordan river and God would heal him. The Jordan River was a muddy river. It was muddy because the river currents pick up mud and carry it along. Naaman didn’t want to get into the muddy river—he thought that rivers where he lived would be better.

Let your child see what a muddy river looks like. Put some mud in a jar and an equal amount of water. Let them shake it up, seeing the muddy water and tell you whether they would want to get into that river or not.
Naaman went into the muddy water because Elisha told him to. Naaman went into the muddy water so God would heal him. But it wasn’t the muddy water that healed Naaman. There was no medicine in the water. He got well because he believed and obeyed God.
