April 1/2 –Jesus Takes Time for Children

Building on Last Week: The New Testament is full of examples of Jesus’ kindness. This week we will see His love for children.

Story Scripture: Mark 10:13-14,16

Bible Verse: “I love the Lord.” Psalm 116:1

At Home Ideas:

Happy/Sad Face:
You can retell the story to your child and have them help you. Have your child draw a happy face on one side of a paper plate and a sad face on the other. You could attach a wooden craft stick or straw to the plate as a handle. When you tell the story have your child show which face is appropriate for that part of the story.

Friend of Mine song:
Here is a simple song to sing to the tune of “Row, row, row Your Boat”:
I love, love, love the Lord.
Thank you, Lord, I say.
Lord Jesus is truly a Friend of mine.
Thank You, Lord, I say.

March 25/26 – Jesus, God’s Wonderful Son, Transfigured

Building on Last Week: Last unit emphasized the importance of worshiping God. These next few lessons look at how Jesus was worshiped because He is God’s Son.

Story Scripture: Matthew 17:1-8

Bible Verse: “Jesus is the Son of God.” 1 John 4:15

At Home Ideas:

Shining Cloud
This craft will help your child understand how bright the cloud was on top of the mountain and how brightly Jesus shone on that day. Give your child a piece of white paper they can color. Have bright colored chalk or paints and brushes. Ask your child what colors they would use if they were going to draw a picture of what Peter, James and John saw on the mountain. Help them think of the brightest colors and encourage them to put streaks of “glory” on their paper. Then talk about how none of these colors is as bright as the light that God sent on the mountain. No one could ever paint such brightness as Jesus had then.

How Big is a Mountain?
It can be very difficult for a child to understand how big a mountain really is. If you have the ability, try taking your child on an uphill hike and see how quickly they get tired. Let them know that Jesus and Peter, James and John climbed a mountain too. If you don’t have the chance to go outside you can build a pretend mountain at home. Use blocks or cartons or whatever you have available to create a mountain. Cover it with a blanket. Then place small action dolls, animals, etc. at the base of the mountain and look at the difference in size. How long would it take to climb that mountain? Would it be hard?

March 18/19 – Abraham Leaves Home

Building on Last Week: Moves come more often than we might like, but spiritually mature people will handle change well because they know God is with them. Daniel and Abraham knew that God was with them, and they responded obediently in faith.

Story Scripture: Genesis 11:31-12:8; Hebrews 11:8-9

Bible Verse: “The Lord is my strength.” Psalm 28:7

At Home Ideas:

Going on a Trip:
Have your child help you pack a suitcase with the things they would need on a long trip. Talk about how hard it was for Abraham to move everything he owned a long distance. Then, of course, you have to unpack! Let your child help with this, too!

Make a Suitcase:
You can make a suitcase out of a paper plate. Fold a plate in half and punch holes where you can thread yarn or chenille wires to resemble a handle. Then find pictures in magazines/newspapers that your child can cut out to show items they could pack in their “suitcase”. Glue these inside their suitcase and close it up. Make sure and talk about how “strong” you need to be to pack up and move.

March 11/12 –Daniel and His Friends Grow Strong

Building on Last Week: David displayed spiritual strength from the time of his youth. So did Daniel and his three friends.

Story Scripture: Daniel 1:1-21

Bible Verse: “The Lord is my strength.” Psalm 28:7

At Home Ideas:

Good Food?
Lay out pictures of different foods (some good and some not so good for us) that you have cut from magazines or you can lay open the grocery store ads from the newspaper. Give your child something to toss onto the paper (such as a coin). Then ask your child to tell you if it’s a healthy or unhealthy food.
Remind them what Daniel and his friends ate to stay healthy.

I Am Made Special By God
Have your child lay down on a large piece of butcher paper. Trace around them with a marker. Help your child decorate their “self-portrait”. God wants them to take care of their special body by eating the right foods.
