Listen to what children are saying...
"He's funny. I feel like I could tell people about Jesus." Amy age 8
"He taught me about missionaries. It's cool that they're there. I think I would like to be one in India." Mark, age 8
"Captain Ordinary has inspired me to help friends if they lose something or get hurt. He also taught me how interesting it is that missionaries went to so many different countries." Bethany, age 9
Read Captain Ordinary's story in The Front Porch this month!
In January, we’re doing a unit with a missions emphasis called Captain Ordinary. It’s the life stories of missionaries, past and present, emphasizing that they were/are ordinary people whom God used to do extraordinary things.
Thanksgiving Sunday, the kids took a tip from teachers to count all the things they were thankful for. Before anyone knew it, it became a contest to see how many different things they were thankful for. The 9:00 kids came up with an impressive 495 blessings and the 10:45 group thought up 860 blessings! Kudos to the teachers for counting them! Here is a small sample: "God has given me an allowance, snow days, good coordination, unspoiled food, and cherry bombs."
The Puppeteers will be performing during Kids Clubhouse with their special Christmas presentation on December 16. You don't want to miss it.
Volunteering as a Shepherd in Kids Clubhouse
Parent volunteers in Kids Clubhouse are called Shepherds. They can be moms or dads, uncles or aunts, grandparents, singles, etc. We don’t require Shepherds to pass a “spirituality” test, just come and be willing to help guide the kids through Clubhouse, ask the discussion questions, and pass out snacks. So to prepare for a small group on Sunday, the volunteers need to get dressed and brush their teeth.
This format has improved over last year because in the past, the kids had to process the story in the large group, maybe getting a chance to answer a question but more likely not. Then they would go upstairs and play with toys, never really having a chance to talk in a guided way. Since we never want to put volunteer Shepherds in the position of teaching, we still don’t expect to give them “teaching” responsibility, but only read the discussion questions provided and let kids talk, then pray for each other. Our intent is to give kids a chance to interact about the content of the Bible story in a small group setting.

In January, Kids Clubhouse kids learned how God has called all of His children, from Abraham all the way to school-age kids today, to be his agents in the world. God blesses "us" so that we will pass on the blessing to the nations so the nations will praise God (see Psalm 67:2-3,Genesis 12:2-3).
We would like to encourage your children to see themselves as a part of that cycle, especially when they have the chance to travel to another nation on a mission trip. Please let us know if your family is taking part in a mission trip this summer (even if you've already gone), so that we may highlight your child and family in his/her classroom with a "secret agent update". Contact Jim and Peggy McGee with your details anytime this summer (the sooner, the better).
Clubhouse kids serve lunch to the homeless!
On March 25 the Clubhouse Kids learned that Jesus shocked his disciples by washing their feet because that was something only a servant did for others. They had a chance to serve others by making 200 sack lunches for the homeless shelter. Third and fourth graders made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, 2nd graders put the sandwiches in zip lock bags, and also put a cookie in a zip lock bag. 5K’s and 1st graders colored messages like, "Jesus loves you and I do, too" and packed the sandwiches, chips, cookie and Capri Sun into the lunch sacks. The bags were taken to the shelter where the people at the desk were thrilled. "We didn't know what we were going to do for dinner tonight”, they said, “and now we have it!" Way to be the hands and feet of Jesus, kids!
Bible Verse: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45
Jeanne Snow, a valuable member of the Children’s Ministry Team, is stepping down and her shoes were so big, two people were needed to replace her.
Ericka Meyer is the new Kid’s Clubhouse Small Group Ministry Leader. She also serves as the AWANA secretary, so she is not new to the Children’s Ministry Team. She and her husband, Jimmy, have two boys. She has already proven she is reliable, pays attention to detail, and has great relational skills. She will be an excellent leader and she and Sandy will make a great team!
Shelley Lugauer is the new Children’s Ministry Communications Director. She will be creating eKidz every month and will ensure that Children’s Ministry information is correct both on the web and in print. Shelley and her husband, Paul, have two children. They are active in the Ascent community, and Shelley does the Ascent newsletter. She also has a dramatic side, which she feeds by helping with the drama team in the Tribe. She is a welcome addition to Children’s Ministry.
The 5th Dimension families took a vote on when they wanted to hold their class on Sunday mornings and they chose 9:00 a.m.
Coming soon: Graduation on May 13. Also, check out the new unit on Parables of Jesus for the Kid's Clubhouse here.
The India Children’s Choir was our guest in Kid’s Clubhouse for two weeks in January. It was so fun to include them in our Clubhouse activities and get to know them. We were learning about missions in “Operation Global Glory” and were thrilled to be visited by missionary children who were bringing the message of the gospel to us!
They had only recently left their families in India to travel and perform in the United States for several months. Many of our families were privileged to host them in their homes as they began their missionary journey. A highlight was when they were given a crash course in puppetry by our award winning puppet team, Puppets Reaching Children. New friends are always welcome!
Children in Kid’s Clubhouse are on a secret mission! Secret Agent McGee and his team will be teaching throughout January about the mission God has called us to. Offering from January through March will go toward support of the families traveling to Boquillas.
A highlight will be January 27 & 28 when the India Children’s Choir visits Pulpit Rock. On that weekend, Kid’s Clubhouse will go into the main service to watch the presentation, and then the performers will join us in Clubhouse so we can meet them personally.
